im thinking about getting a cat, i already have one thats kinda pertective but hes fat and doenst like to move alot. if i keep his food and water and liter in my room away from my other cats (his is in the basement) do you think that this could work out? without them fighting all the time?

In my experience cats, two cats that haven't grown up together usually don't make the best of friends.
Try a gradual introduction of the new cat to all of your pre-existing cats. Allow some time for the new cat to adjust to his new surroundings before doing so. To be safe, only allow to cats to interact while supervised until you can be sure that they will behave while by themselves. Keep in mind that it might take your cat several weeks or months to get used to having another cat around. Be prepared to jump into a catfight, too. You will also have to be prepared to do something should they be unable to get along. And remember, your older cat was there first.
not at al cats a very territorial animals, the only way is by introducing the older cat to a kitten, we had two cats and we introduced a kitten to them, and the both fell in love with it. The kitten which is now my cat gets along just fine with the other two. But even then I would be cautious.

i've had similar problems. every cat is different. i have had cats both indoor and outdoor ones all my life. some get used to other cats very quickly, and others never adapt. all of my lazy & "fat" cats have not really cared when a new one came into the household. as long as they didnt mess with their food that is. i think you should try it. if u want another cat, just do it. i love cats and to me the more the merrier. from my experience this could work. it also depends on the new cat thats coming in. if he/she is very territoryal, then more fighting could occur. otherwise, i think its a good thing to try. good luck & have fun on ur decision
How many cats do you have? Some of the answers here are good. Why do you need another cat? Are you caring for one that needs a home? Do you love the protective cat you have? If you do, it really might hurt more than help to get a cat when the cat you have hates other cats.
u could get another cat, but it is best not to. the cat u have now will probably fight alot with the other cat
Possibly. I would get one that is the same sex. Even if they do fight at first in time they will more than likely get used to each other.
We had a male cat for a year, and we just loved him. But he seemed to be lonely. He would sit in the window and make a sad mournful cry when he saw other cats. (We can't let him out because he runs away). Anyway, we decided to get another cat. Our male was rather rambunctious and crazy so we decided to try getting a female. When we first introduced to female into the house, our male was quite upset. He hissed and spit and all his hair stood on end. But we made sure to spend time with both cats in the same room, and we took turns playing with them and petting them. At first there was some fighting, but mostly they just steered clear of each other. They were sharing the same food and water dishes, and the same outdoor house in our garage. After about a week, they just seemed pretty much indifferent to each other, and all the hissing and fighting had stopped. Soon after that they became friends. We have had the cats together for a year now, and they get a long wonderfully. They play fight, cuddle and give each other baths. They are wonderful companions to each other. I'm not saying that it will be this way with all cats, but it has been a good experience for us.
You could try this and then introduce them gradually. It could work out to where your cat really doesn't mind the new little guy (or gal).
