  1. the thing about Sphynx cats the noone realizes is that they do have hair. Its very small and is known as down hair. And you must realize they aren't the prettiest of cats. Despite the hair, i think that your safer with a Sphynx than that of a short haired cat. Good luck
  2. Usually people are not allergic to the actual hair, but the skin dander. In that case, then you will be allergic to any cat. The Sphynx cat actually does have hair but it's very fine, short hair. So if any cat, that one would be better since it's hair is shorter.
  3. No you wont be allergic to them since they have no or little fur to have particles build up in
  4. There really is no cat that is totally allergy free, except for some special cats that are being bred now, but are likely hard to obtain, and very expensive. It is usually the dander of the cat that causes the allergy. Perhaps your doctor could do tests to find out precisely what you are allergic to with cats. That would be a better guide than any response in this forum could give. You stated it was the hair; for fact, or is that would you are convinced is the problem? Then a sphynx cat would give you a better chance, but they are not the most attractive of cats. And I think they are prone to some problems so they need special considerations.
  5. It's usually the protein in the cats saliva that people are allergic to not the hair. Cats spends huge amounts of time washing and the saliva not only covers the fur but gets sprayed into the room. A hairless cat will probably not need as much washing but I suspect you could still have a problem. Try to arrange a visit to a breeder of Sphynxes and spend some time there, this may give you some idea of the reaction if any, that you may get.
  6. Even the Spinx has hair but Please be care full what once was a hair allergy could be cat dander ( dandruff) you may be safe with the Spinx and also the Siamese. the Siamese is a course haired cat, whose fur is too course to irritate the nasal passages. BUT cat DANDER is like dandruff in the can world.
  7. a sphynx cat has hair but it's very short. you probably won't notice allergies because it's not shedding all over the place.
  8. Are you sure it's the hair? The cat has a chemical in its saliva that triggers the allergic reaction in most people. It gets all over their hair when they clean themselves. Unfortunately, there aren't any cats that won't trigger the allergic reaction. There's some skepticism about the claims of the new breed that costs $$$$ as it hasn't been independently verified.
  9. My cat (see avatar) is a Siberian Forest cat, the only cat we could own because my son is allergic to cats. We took him to try out this cat by exposing him to them three separate times (we were very careful, especially the first time). Yet he had no reaction. So we got two of them and my son has never had a problem. We have had people come over with cat allergies who didn't know we had cats! They were shocked that they had no reaction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberian_(cat) They are not allergy proof, but they lack an enzyme called FelD that other cats have that cause allergic reactions. They were about $500 each, which is a lot, but it beats not having a cat. Look for a local breeder and try one out.
  10. If you are allergic to cats, you are not allergic to the fur but the dander produced by the skin. Therefore, no cat is 'hypoallergenic'. However, there is a product that you can purchase from some veterinary clinics that mixes in to water that changes the enzymes in the cat's skin, eliminating the allergy-causing dander. I'm not 100% sure the name of the prescription, however, the following is information to a clinic that I know carries it!
