- try www.petfinder.com you may have to check often to find one tho.. they are hard to find, and rarely show up in rescue. I had been keeping an eye for a while for one in OH, but the few I see are in another state, not really hairless, or are not good with other pets.. I did finally get a Sphynx from a freind who had aquired one, but discovered she was allergic. Also check out the classifieds section on petfinder, you may get lucky and find one that someone is rehoming.
- "...because of the problems with breeders." What problems with breeders? If you can find someone that has cats registered with CFA, or TICA, I'm sure you won't have any problems with them. What breed of hairless cat are you looking for? A Sphynx? I found someone that has CFA registered Sphynx's in Edinburg, TX. Edinburg is South West of Houston. Here's their website: http://www.firehouse-sphynx.com/ I also found someone registered with TICA that has Sphynx's. They're in Plano, TX. Plano is North of Dallas, and North West of Houston. It's a little bit far from Houston, but if you really want a hairless cat... Here's their website: http://www.hairfreecats.com/ I checked Petfinder and I didn't find any Spynx's in Texas. Your best bet is a breeder registered with CFA or TICA.
- My best suggestion would be to find rescues that specialize in the particular breed you're interested in. That way you're not supporting the breeding but helping to save the cats. Otherwise, just call all the local shelters and ask if they have hairless breeds in at that time. We called around and found a pup we wanted way out in La Porte, but ended up not getting him and went to the SPCA to adopt two cats instead.
- Try HSPCA they're great!
- Do a Google search for your area.
- You won't find Sphynx running around in the streets. Good reputable breeders of purebreds are one of the better places to get a cat. Why? Because they carefully select the cats for breeding, they test their cats for genetic problems and will give health guarantees and neuter/spay them before you get them.
