What kind of cat is the best mouse hunter?

I have mice. Dammit. I need a cat. I'm going to go to the shelter tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the best kind of cat to get. Like what breed, age, size, sex? I'm not sure if any of that makes a difference, but if you have any comments on the subject I'd appreciate it!

  1. the best kind of mouser are the cats whose parents were mousers and showed them how its done. City cats are only so so at catching vermin. Use craigslist to find a barn cat
  2. As far as I know all kinds of cats would be good hunters. Obviously choose a very healthy looking active kitty as this will definitely ensure he/she will be full of energy! It's most cats natural instincts to want to catch mice/insects etc, so any cat should try case after it and catch it. I know mine stalks and attacks anything that moves...... including my feet... ouch! Beware though if kitty does cat a mouse, he/she will be very proud of himself/herself and like to show you what they have caught, so dont be surprised if one day he decides to drop a dead mouse on your lap! Good Luck!
  3. Those big fluffy cats that are called barn cats.
  4. Female Norwegian Forest cats. However since pickings are going to be slim at a shelter get a kitten, feed them a mouse, and teach them to have a taste for it!
  5. Most of my mice hunters turned out to be Calicos
  6. Get a Maine Coon Cat, or just a really healthy cat that is smart enough to kill the mouse instead of being afraid of it. I had a really cool kitty once but ran away from mice. Hard to enjoy a kitty after that. We kept him though, inside only.
  7. Call an exterminator. Mice can carry disease. Shelters adopt cats out to be beloved housepets - not employees. Plus a cat can't get inside your walls which is where the mice are probably living. And the cost of caring for a cat over it's lifetime is going to be FAR more expensive than one visit by an exterminator.
  8. try a rat terrier dog
  9. Any FEMALE !!!! I have 3 and no mice at all!!
  10. A well cared for, well fed and loved cat will make the best mouser and bring you lots of pressies!!!!
  11. Well the best mouser is(or was?) a tabby.I think it is/was a female.
  12. Your IDEAl cat to be a mouser is one who's mother lived outside and hunted herself.. and her kittens were with her till they were at least around 10 weeks old.. She'll have taught them how to hunt So you're looking for some dude in the country who has a friendly barn cat/outdoor cat with kittens around 15 weeks old..
  13. I live by a field and every single winter all of the mouse make a run for my house. I brought my cat in the house back in November and haven't had one single mouse. I'm not sure if they can sense or smell him in the house or what. He's just a normal Tabby cat. So, I would say maybe any cat would do? Unless, they just like to sleep all the time :).
