Canadian Hairless

Where can I find a Sphynx (hairless) cat? I live in Austin, Texas, and I am willing to travel buy one.?

I just love the way Sphynx cats look and behave, as well as the fact that they're hairless (fewer allergies and no noticeable shedding). The problem is that they're so hard to find. Where can I get one? I would prefer not to travel more than 1000 miles from Austin, TX. Thanks for your help!

  1. You can go to the CFA Website. Cat Fanciers Association and search for breeders there. Or a magazine available at your local bookstore is Cat Fancy. It has a lot of breeders listed. Sometimes a breeder will be listed not near you, however if you call them, they can usually find one nearer you. Lastly, call your local chamber. There are usually at least 2 major cat shows in any large city twice a year.
  2. petfinders.com they have several agencies throughout the united states that co-operate with adoption agencies
  3. There should be links to breeders from http://www.cfainc.org. This site should also tell you about any cat shows in your area. By going to a cat show you will be able to see a lot of cat breeds in person and talk to the breeders. All breeders at the cat show will have appropriate documentation or they couldn't enter the show. Outside of the show, I would be wary, however, of any breeder that is unwilling to show you their cattery registration and unwilling to give you papers for the cat (or at least a receipt so you can get papers after the alteration surgery). Sphinx cats can be very expensive because the are scarce. Prices for purebred cats are like real estate -- whatever the market will bear. By the way, it's not the hair that causes the allergies -- it's the dander. A Sphinx cat isn't completely bald. It has a soft, velvety covering so it only looks that way. Even if you do end up with some sort of allergy there are ways to lessen the effect and make it possible for those of us who are allergic to live comfortably with cats.
