Thinking about getting a hairless cat?
I want a hairless cat & Im curious if anyone knows if a person is allergic to normal cats - would they be allergic to the hairless cats as well??

- Yes - they actually can be. People are allergic to the dander (dead skin) from a cat - not its hair. So not having hair doesn't always eliminate the chance of allergic reactions. What have you learned about the Sphynx hairless cat? Do you know they have to be bathed every week or so because they get greasy? They don't have hair to absorb oils from the skin. Special care also has to be given to keep them warm and to keep them out of the sun because they can burn. If you're allergic to cats get on Allegra D or another allergy medication. Then spend some time volunteering at your local shelter working with cats to see if the meds help.
- cat dander is usualy what they are allergic to but they would still produce cat dander its like...skin... also you may want to rethink the Mexican hairless... they aren't really a breed....yet.... they are trying to inbreed to get that kind of cat and inbreeding animals can cause alot of health problems.
- Hairless cats will fell wierd, and probably it will always be dry from its skin.
- My best friend has a hairless cat and she hasn't had any allergy problems. No hair, not as much dander. It feels really warm and odd. It acts just like any cat though. It HATES the cold so you must be prepared to keep it warm at all times. Maybe even a sweater. They are expensive.
- Why don't you save up your money and get an allergy free cat. They breed them for people that are allergic.
- go to China. There they skin cats. You can have your pick there.
- i wouldn't chose a hairless cat, but it's up to you.
- Cool, a hairless cat would be a unique pet. if you are worried about allergies, take allergy pills like Alegra.
- First of all, it's not fur causing allergies, so yes, someone with cat allergies may have an even worse reaction to a hairless cat. On the other hand, I have eye allergies to shedding cat fur. I have found that Bengals are a truly great breed since thay barely shed and have a thin pelt instead of cat fur. I'd look into Bengals. Also consider a Rex (either Cornish or Devon) because they don't shed. The Cornish looks a lot like a Spynx in body and head shape, but has thin curly hair. Also Siberian Forest cats are 90% hypoallergenic. Most people with allergies can live with a Siberian. Second, I would not buy over the internet, but find a local breeder and test to see if you are allergic first before buying any breed of cat. Third, I envy you! I want a Spynx so bad, but my husband says over his dead body! I thought about killing him, but my Bengals and Siamese like having a mommy not in jail! (LOL a long running joke between my husband and I!) That and I fear it might freeze to death in my sometimes drafty house! Good luck no matter what you decide. Chanda
