Where is the best place to adopt a Sphinx (hairless cat) in southern California?
My friend and I are looking for a Sphinx kitten as a pet and don't know where to look. We can only travel in California and would like to get in touch with a reputable breeder.

- Look up breeders in southern California or even try breed rescues.
- Try bastsphynx@aol.com or Belfrysphynx@aol.com or Zebasx@aol.com ... if they don't have one they can refer you to a breeder there who does.
- look up at the fancy cat magazine you'll find on the back page some cat breaders for hairless cats.
- I show cats in Southern California as well as help run rescue for Cornish Rex. We also help Sphynx and Devon Rex. If you go to our site and contact us privately we can refer yo uto an ethical breeder. It's unlucky that we have many unethical breeders here in Southern California. $2,000 is too much, most reputable breeders do not charge this much for a Sphynx. Unfortunately, many people think that breeding cats is a way to make money. What they don't understand is that the best breeders often lose money--it costs a lot to show and provide the best health care, food, etc. The funny thing is is that the most ethical breeders often charge less than the bad ones. Most ethical breeders DO NOT advertise in the newspaper. Many don't even advertise in magazines like Cat Fancy. I suggest attending a local cat show and carefully observing the cats and talking with the breeders. If the cats look dirty or have runny eyes, walk away. Sphynx should be playful and outgoing. Also be worried if the breeder is willing to sell you a kitten on the spot. Again, most ethical breeders will set up a time after the cat show to talk to you further and decide whether to sell one of her babies to you. Stay away if the breeder doesn't require a contract and provide a written health statement. Sphynx are prone to genetic heart defects and it would be horrible to lose a beloved cat to this.
